WebStandards!! why should i care?
Few weeks ago, was talking to a friend and happened to mention Web Standards, then he tried to convince me that it is just somesort of new fashion, that no body should be really worried much about...i got confused cos this was an experienced webdesigner with no clue about web standards of W3C.
Okey, i thought this a very good opportunity to really spread out the holly gospel, so my first question was like this...
"Tell me ! when you need a plumber, who do you call?"
he goes:" oh! he needs at least to be a CORGI reg!"
Standards are pattern to our daily lives, we have standards units, standards media formats, standards manners, standards this, standards that...in fact i cant imagine life without standards.
What is Standards
Standards are produced by many organizations, some for internal usage only, others for use by a groups of people, groups of companies, or a subsection of an industry.
Standards Organisation
International Organization for Standardization
European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization
British Standards Institute
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
International Media Grid Standards Organization
Type of Standards
Standards can be:
de facto: which means they are followed for convenience
de jure: which means they are used because of legal reasons. Government agencies often have to follow standards issued by official standardization organizations.
A standard can be open or not (proprietary).
Standards promote compatibility, interchangability and commonality. they guarantee a level of professionalism, expertise, durabilty and above all SAFETY.
Going back to the plumbing scenario, it is only safe and reasonable to use a plumber who's a CORGI reg. or using a qualified DSA driving instructor.
The same goes for the WEB:
Years on now, by using languages, web browser manufacturers have been trying to creating their own standards to force out competitions(..how clever heih), you could see some websites trough some browsers only...and then the W3C came along, created a set of language recommended for developers or manufacturers who wish their product to be labeled W3C compliant, these recommendation became what is actually known as " Web Standards".
The aim behind this, is to encourage writting quality and healthy code, adding meaning to document and separating structure, presentation and behaviour.
A website using standards are compatible in many W3C compliant browsers, easy to be understood by other developers and their much easier to maintain
Bad news or Good news:
Bad news is like any standards of other organizations, W3C recommendations are sometimes implemented partially, causing frustrations. they dont necessarly mean faster loading, large sites are hard to maintain and also teh inconsistency in some browsers.
Good News are standards guarantee a level of professionalism and expertise, accessibilty for a wide community(ie: screen reading browsers, printing, mobile...).
My conclusion is if you dont care having a plumber fixing your pipe who's not qualified, then that's fine, if you want a driving instructor who has no standards then that's fine, same goes if you dont care about using BSI qualified equpments then that's fine, but them my next question is ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND????
